Cryogenic storage system and pressure regulation components
Cryogenic storage tanks are designed to store liquefied gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen, or argon and Carbon dioxide, at extremely low cryogenic temperatures up to -198 Deg C. These tanks operate under pressure and are equipped with various control mechanisms to maintain safe and efficient gas supply. The key components involved in pressure regulation include the Pressure Build Regulator (PBR), Economizer Pressure Regulator, and Main Customer Supply Pressure Reducing Regulator Station.
Pressure Build Regulator (PBR)
The PBR Ensures the tank pressure remains within the desired range, preventing pressure drops that could interrupt gas flow to the end user, and are installed in the pressure build circuit.
As the stored cryogenic liquid is withdraw by the main user, the tank pressure falls below the required operating setpoint of the PBR. The Pressure Build Regulator (PBR) opens and cryogenic liquid from the tank are vaporised by the smaller Pressure Build Vaporizer, and returns the gas to the tank’s headspace. This process repeats until the pressure in the tank reach the required setpoint. The PBR also maintain the tank pressure to create a stable supply to the end user.
Economizer Pressure Regulator
Reduces product loss and enhances efficiency by utilizing excess gas instead of wasting it through venting. The Economizer Pressure Regulator is installed in the pressure build circuit.
During filling of the tank or because of ambient thermal heating, heat transfer into the tank causes the cryogenic liquid to naturally vaporize and increasing the tank internal pressure. The Economizer Pressure Regulator prevents excessive pressure buildup by allowing excess gas to flow from the tank to the supply system instead of venting it to the atmosphere through the Safety Relief Valve (SRV).

Main Supply Pressure Reducing Regulator Station
Ensures a consistent and safe delivery pressure specified by the end user, and optimizing gas usage. The Main Supply Pressure Reducing Regulator is installed after the main vaporisers in the main supply line to the end user.
Before the gas is delivered to the end-user, it passes through the Main Vaporizers, where liquid is converted into gas at ambient or heated conditions. The gas then enters the Main Supply Pressure Reducing Regulator Station, which reduces the high supply pressure from the storage system to the required operating pressure for the customer’s application.
